I fought the roots and I won.
Consistently this grape vine has produced inedible grapes, although the guy who planted it claims they should be. As we look to expand our vegetable crop, we decided it was time to end the vineyard of one plant. One day of cutting it down to a stump. Another three-hour day of digging and cutting all the roots. I could barely roll out the trash can it was so heavy with branches, dirt and roots.
The end.

Well in our little part of the world wide web. Our friend Suzi – the wedding photographer extraordinaire featured our trip to Austin on her photo blog. Everyone should subscribe to her blog: http://www.QWeddings.com/blog
There’s a photo where Al looks like he might pull out the huntin’ gun if you try to take the BBQ sauce from him. INTENSE! That was such a memorable trip. I really planned it so that we had the maximum number of eating experiences in three days. I was not disappointed.
And although I don’t eat meat for several reasons (doesn’t process well in my body, environmental, health safety, etc.) I have to say I enjoyed every bite of brisket and sausage!

We really wanted to have a successful tomato crop this year – unlike last. So I read that the Fullerton Arboretum was a tomato and pepper sale this weekend. They close at 4 p.m. – it’s 45 minute drive and we leave at 2p.m.
We were able to walk away with 4 tomato plants and 2 Italian parsley plants for $16.50. Hope they turn out to be great plants. Here are a few photos of the grounds:

fishermen with my muffins! Here’s a few posts on Al’s fishing blog to prove it!
Did I mention the muffins were low fat? Pumpkin is so moist that they make anything taste good. Dave was such a fan that he requested the recipe two days in a row.
Dave writes: “Other highlights were Al’s homemade muffins (tell your wife “thank you” and I’m still not convinced they were low fat)”
Tight lines writes: “Al, I know it has been mentioned multiple times now but please thank your wife again for the delicious breakfast muffins.”
By the way, I don’t pick these monikers, the fisherman do.

Today I got up at 4:30 a.m. to drive out to Pasadena to a meet a great kid, Sean, and his family. They were in town from Philly and Sean is a Make A Wish kid. His wish was to see the Rose Parade. It’s something he watches on YouTube every day.
We hopped into a waiting limo around 5:45 a.m. and drove around – trying to figure out where we could park. We eventually got out and walked. Unfortunately, the family didn’t bring jackets. They didn’t get the memo that temperatures do drop below 50° F at night in sunny LA. So I brought a bunch of blankets for the kids. In my early-morning haze, I forgot my camera. But I think I did pretty well with my iPhone camera. Check out the photos:

It was a fun day and we had amazing seats. It definitely was a memorable wish. While I was at the parade, Al went fishing. This was what he witnessed the first thing in the morning:

This is one of Al’s favorite Italian desserts, Grandma’s tart. It’s a cream and ricotta filling studded with chocolate chips with a hint of orange and garnished with pignoli nuts (pine nuts). I usually don’t “build up the crust” – I usually don’t have an overhang and now I know why. There is so much butter in the crust that it melts, runs off onto the bottom of the oven and starts a MINI-FIRE. Here’s my phone conversation:
FIREMAN: Is everything all right over there? We’re sending a fire truck.
ME: Um, it just a small baking issue.
FIREMAN: WHAT KIND of issue?
ME: Uh, something is burning.
FIREMAN: We’re sending the fire truck.
ME: No, no, that’s okay. It’s all under control. (Mind you there is smoking billowing throughout the house and it’s gray and hard to see through)
FIREMAN: Are you SURE?
ME: Oh yes. Very sure. Thank you for calling.
FIREMAN: Are you sure?
ME: Yes. Yes.
FIREMAN: Okay…
Next Call
BILL: Janet, it’s Bill. Is everything okay? Al’s on the other line with the alarm company; they are sending a fire truck.
ME: Oh. Everything is okay. I canceled the truck. Really, everything is fine.
AL: What the hell is going on?
ME: Um. Don’t worry it’s under control.
The bright side is everyone loved the torta and it didn’t suffer any damage from the very exciting evening. It was another Christmas hit.

Grilled Octopus from Mozza
Al and I weren’t planning on eating anything special tonight. But somehow ended up at Mozza. The first good sign was we found street parking immediately. Then got seated at the bar, right away. We were planning on sharing four courses. They forgot our pasta dish, so it was three – which was plenty.
During the night we kept sending photos to Mona and Sherwin. They were having dinner with friends, but apparently our meal was better. Thus we were the topic of conversation during their meal and our photos were labeled ” food porn”.
